From 1921-3 he was on the supplementary list or reserve of Officers for the Coldstream Guards. He succeeded his father as 11th. Earl, 5/12/1921. During WW2 he served in the Intelligence Corps. 2Lt., 12/2/40; WS Lt., T/Capt, 13/7/1940; Adjt. Nov. 1940; Captain Jan. 1941; Major, 1945. On Staff Duties at the I Corps Depot, 27/11/1944. As is usual with the I Corps, there is no record of what he was actually doing during the War. Afterwards he farmed 200 acres at Beer Farm, Binfield, Bracknell, Berks. He died in November 1963. Extensive tributes to his work with the Kennel Club and the Talyllyn Railway Preservation Society appeared in the Times. He was twice married: JESSICA RUTH REINHARD, née BROWN. An actress, d. of F.A. Brown of Buffalo. They were married 19/7/1923 in Chicago. She had previously married, in 1918, Cyril de Witt Reinhard, naval contractor and electrical engineer, from whom she was divorced in Oct. 1922 in Chicago. The Earl divorced her in the Scottish Courts in 1928. She then married as her 3rd. husband 18/12/1928 Vivian Cornelius, s. of Percy Cornelius of Windlesham, Surrey. The Vlasto Family originates from Chios in the eastern Aegean, birthplace of the poet Simonides (fl. early 5th. Century B.C.). On the 6th. of May 1822, during the Greek War of Independence, the Turks carried out a particularly savage massacre on the island; at least one member of the family was hanged and most of the Greek population of Chios were forced into exile. This "Greek Diaspora" found centres firstly at Trieste and Salonika; later many came to England. The 11th. Earl had no children by either marriage and was succeeded as 12th. Earl by his cousin Captain John Douglas Carnegie.

The Vlasto and Galati families are recorded as having shared a large house and estate in the Chios 'Kampos', known after 1822 as 'Hioussein', or 'Souzountis Bey'. Since there is no record of marriage alliances between the Vlastos and Galatis prior to the marriage of George Vlasto to Zambelou Galati (aged 16), one wonders whether there is any link between the shared property connection and this couple. The Kmapos house was, by 1999, demolished to make way for a BP petrol station on the main Kampos Road, a few metres south of the grocery and restaurant. The surrounding walls of the estate remain largely intact, stretching south to its farm buildings on the corner of a lane leading westwards off the Kampos road, though the land within is now sub-divided. This was almost certainly the house Argenti described, in his Libro d'Oro of the early 1950s, as being shared by the Vlasto and Galati families -- and probably named 'Hioussein', or 'Souzountis Bey' in recognition of the Turkish nobleman who occupied it after the departure of the Vlastos in 1822. Unfortunately, since the gateway has now gone the Vlasto armorials, which Argenti then described seeing there, have also disappeared. It seems likely that this estate formed the southernmost of the three adjacent Vlasto estates west of the Kampos Road.

Taken as a hostage and hanged by the Turks at Chios in the Massacre of Chios 6 May 1822. The dungeon in which 47 of the island's leaders (demogeronts) were hanged exists to this day. Above the door a plaque reads:
"In this dark dungeon in the year 1822, 74 members of noble Chian families were kept prisoner as hostages of the Turks, and from here on 23rd April 1822 after untold suffering, the Bishop of Chios, Metropolitan Plato, and 46 others were hanged: they died for their faith and for their country."
An obelisk in marble from Skyros now marks the spot, close to the walls of the kastro, where, by the fountain, ended the long line of swinging corpses which stretched from that point to the Porta Maggiore. Standing in a recess on the side of Vounaki Square, now known as The Way of The Martys, the obelisk names Loukas Vlasto among the 47 who were murdered there. To engender greater terror, the Turks hung the bodies from trees around the city centre for three days, having already ridiculed Metropolitan Plato by placing a Turkish cap, a 'tiara', on his head.
The heads of Metropolitan [Bishop] Plato and the leader, Makarios were placed on pikes on the ramparts and pelted with stones by Turkish fanatics. The others too were decapitated and their heads shipped to Constantinople where the Sultan displayed them in victory 'pyramids' to demonstrate his great victory over the 'infidels' of Chios. (See 'Greek Fire' Ch. 5). The headless bodies were given to the Jews who dragged them to the harbour's edge and threw them into the Aegean. Breasts, genitals, ears, noses and fingers were shipped to Constantinople and strewn about the streets. Only the nobility were hanged. Villagers were kept imprisoned until they died of malnutrition or disease.
The British, Austrian and French vice-consuls were then induced to convince about 1,000 in hiding in the countryside that they were being offered an amnesty. They were horrified to find that the Vahid pasha then ordered them all to be killed. The Turkish admiral hanged a further 70 from the yard-arm of his flagship.
Around 5,000 Chiots (mostly prosperous merchants and diplomats) were abroad at the time of the massacre. Another 15,000 managed to escape before the arrival of the captain pasha's Turkish troops invaded the island.
Of those on the island who remained alive, records show that 41,000 Chians were deported to slavery in Turkey. In Constantinople some were offered for sale at 100 piastres each. Mass circumcisions of young Christian Chians took place in Constantinople while women were sent to the brothels.
In May 1822 the British Ambassador in Constantinople, Viscount Strangford, wrote: "My Lord, The Transactions at Scio [Chios] appear to have been of a most horrible description, and the ferocity of the Turks to have been carried to a pitch which makes humanity shudder. The whole of the Island , with the exception of the Twenty-four Mastic Villages [uniquely valuable to the Turks], presents one mass of ruin. The unfortunate inhabitants have paid with their lives, the price of their ill-advised rebellion [against being absorbed into the Ottoman Empire]. The terror even extended to Chian merchants living in Constantinople. Viscount Strangford wrote on 25 May 1822: "The most tragical occurrence took place on the Eighteenth (Instant), when, in spite of the assurances so often given to me by the Porte, that she considered those unhappy men as perfectly innocent, and that no offence could be alleged against them, the Ten Sciot [Chiot] Hostages residing here, were publicly beheaded. They were all persons of good repute, great connections in Trade, particularly with the English merchants, and of large and honourably acquired fortunes. Their fate is deeply regretted even by the Turks; the better class of whom do not scruple to inveigh against this transaction, as an unnecessary cruelty, and to attribute it entirely to the barbarous system of terrorism which Halet Effendi pursues for the sake of diverting public attention from his own misdeeds" (See Public Records Office: F.O. A Demogeront of Chios, who, in 1822, was incarcerated in the 'Kastro' by the Turks and held with other leaders as a hostage. He played a dominant role in the island's affairs as the tragedy of the Massacre of Chios unfolded. He attempted, in consultations with the previously reasonable Ottoman governor, Vahid Pasha, to negotiate the freedom of 40 self-selected fellow nobles, held hostage in their own fortress by the Turks. But with the Greek fleet lying threateningly offshore and awaiting a supportive revolt by Chians against the Turks, tension was running too high and Vahid Pasha could not be pursuaded that the Chians would comply with Ottoman demands. The consequent debacle and horrifying massacre of the population of the island still ranks as one of history's most barbaric acts of genocide. It is presumed that Michael Vlasto pursuaded or bribed a Turk to let him escape with his Chian-born wife and young family. They sailed for Syros, eventually reaching Trieste where the couple eventually died in 1849 and 1851 respectively, in the company of many others of the Chios diaspora. Among their eleven children was Dr Alexander Vlasto, author of an important history of Chios.

This is the Michael Vlasto whose splendid portrait appears (1999) carved in marble on the Vlasto tomb in Trieste. With him there are listed his son and grandson: Stephanos Michael Vlasto (1805-1886) and Michael Stephanos Vlasto (1837-1885). Intriguingly the epitaph states prominently that Michael was one of 10 survivors (presumably referring to those who escaped hanging at the hands of the Turks in 1822. Unfortunately the names on the tomb's horizontal slab have disappeared. They may well have included his tragic daughter Oriettou Vlasto. The text on his tomb reads, intriguingly: "A survivor among ten other companions -- Michael Vlasto -- From Chios -- Hastened to the grave -- When he was in all 87 years old -- He lived piously and rests here -- 11th November 1849". [The age given on the tomb has not been translated and has been interpolated]

Michael Vlasto is described as having two estates within the centre of Chios town:
1. A large palazzo in what is now Vlasto Street in Aplotaria which was once set in the middle of vast gardens which extended east towards the port and which was rebuilt after the earthquake. Philip Argenti describes this as: "A large estate in the town, Aplotaria, situated behind the property [which in 1955] belongs to the Machairiadi, close to the ancient church of St Nicolas. A magnificent Genoese style palazzo its exterior was restored in the 1990s to form a bank. Judging from its age, it may have been the home of four generations of the Vlasto family.
2. A second city centre property is described as being later acquired by the Choremi family and 'adjacent to the Rodocanachi house'. Is this the large and beautiful estate which in 1999 was owned by the author's good friends, Zannis & Maria Choremi? They are the fifth generation of their family to live there. Philip Argenti writes: "Michael Vlasto had another house (Choremi property) adjacent to the Rodocanachi house."
Philip Argenti describes a third Vlasto house and estate in Atsiki in the city centre. It appears to have been situated immediately behind and west of the present Choremi family estate (see above). This site was cleared in the 1980s or 1990s to make way for a shopping centre but was still vacant in 1999. No identifiable remains of the house are visible. It is not yet clear which branch of the Vlasto family occupied this property, though Alexander Vlasto is known to have had his estate in the town centre at Kato Kaloplyti.
In addition, Argenti describes a further nine Vlasto estates, mostly in the Kampos region -- some of which would undoubtedly have belonged to Michael Vlasto and his children.

(See 'Libro D'Oro' 177 page 180) A Manoli Dimitri and Peter Paul Rodocanachi were among the 74 island leaders held hostage by the Turks in the Kastro in Chios during the 1822 Massacre of Chios and among the 47 to be hanged. A Michael Matthew and Paul George Rodocanachi were released. A Pandely Rodocanachi was hanged in Constantinople.
A tomb stone in the Greek cemetery in Livourno appears to record the names of Zangolio Rodocanachi and Alexandre M Vlasto.
